- Greece to stop financing the European Atomic Energy Community EURATOM - EURATOM’s funding under conditions of financial difficulty is a provocation
- The withdrawal of Greece from the Euratom Treaty
- EURATOM to be dissolved.
For a nuclear-free Europe
Greece without unnecessary financial burdens
For a safe Aegean Sea in a peaceful Mediterranean
Greece does not have nuclear power plants. Some moves towards their construction in the 70s in the wider area of Karystos fortunately were not materialised. However, despite the fact that our country has no nuclear power plants, she participates together with another 13 EU countries in the EURATOM Treaty, funding it annually, even under the present state of severe economic crisis, when the Welfare State (Public Health, Education and the Protection of unemployed and other vulnerable social groups) is collapsing.
What is the objective of the EURATOM Treaty (Article 1): “It shall be the task of the Community to contribute to the raising of the standard of living in the Member States and to the development of relations with the other countries by creating the conditions necessary for the speedy establishment and growth of nuclear industries.”
The Greek network Friends of Nature, participating in the European campaign launched by the FRIENDS OF NATURE INTERNATIONAL, together with the undersigned organisations and the citizens who support actively the campaign demand:
• The immediate dissolution of the EURATOM Treaty
• Or else, the autonomous exit of Greece and other participating EU Member States from the EURATOM Treaty.
• The immediate termination of Euratom’s funding
Greece has no reason to participate in the undemocratic and uncontrolled EURATOM Treaty under which there is no commitment to the implementation of the Aarhus Convention, which ensures access to information, public participation in decision making, access to justice on environmental issues.
At a time when the use of atomic energy is declining worldwide, especially after the recent "accident" in Fukushima, but also with the particular threat to our country from the construction of nuclear power plants at Akkuyu and Sinopi in Turkey, we consider the request for the dissolution of the EURATOM Treaty or the independent exit of Greece a realistic and necessary political action for economic, ecological and geopolitical reasons.
We invite organisations, institutes, the universities of the country, the peace movement, action groups and NGOs which have been involved in lengthy struggles to protect the environment against nuclear energy and nuclear weapons, to sign the resolution for the immediate termination of financing Euratom and for the independent exit of Greece from it, with the perspective of the Treaty’s final dissolution.
Particularly we call on vulnerable social groups affected by unemployment, insecurity and the erosion of the welfare state to support with their participation the Friends of Nature campaign.
We call the government, the political parties, the local government, trade unions to take a clear political position by adopting the resolution.
The Greek network FRIENDS OF NATURE participates in the campaign launched by the world environmental organization FRIENDS OF NATURE and supported by well known international agencies.
(In addition we recommend that you sign the European Resolution
